| Resumo | The need of initiatives for implementing operational and automatic monitoring sytema in the Cerrado biome is becoming critical because of the conversion of more than 50% of its natural vegetation into land use classes. An alternative for such systems can be the use of MODIS vegetation índices. In order to facilitate the data processing of MODIS data that originally come from 16 bits, many users use to convert 8 bits. However, there are few research analyzing the influence of such conversion, especially in the change detection studies. This work investigated the effects of the radiometric resolution degradation in the potential of the Cerrado´s deforestation detection. The test sites were the Brasilia National Park (BNP), an area with great representation of Cerrado vegetation and the Emas National Park (ENP), an more homogeneous preserved area. We analyzed the EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index) images with spatial resolution of 250 meters (MOD13Q1), tiles h13v10 and h12v10, and overpasses from July, 2001 and July, 2003. The results showed significant changes as function of radiometric resolution degradation. In the BNP, we found a difference of 108 hectares when the images were degraded from 16 to 8 bits, with a limiar of 0,20. In ENP, we found a difference of 7,523 hectares for the same limiar. The results showed that the changes in parameters such as radiometric resolution can affect operational and automatic monitoring systems significantly because of high amount of comission errors that are generated. These influences were stronger for more homogeneous study areas. | |||
